Ingrown toenails: what to do (and what to avoid)

Ingrown toenails can be painful and can become infected if they’re not managed properly. They often happen when the nail edge presses into the surrounding skin.

Avoid digging down the sides of the nail or cutting a deep ‘V’ shape — this can make the problem worse. Keep the area clean and dry, and choose footwear that doesn’t compress the toe.
